Digital marketing is a valuable skill set, and the demand for it is higher than ever. With the world becoming increasingly digitalized and businesses investing in new technology, the marketing function must constantly evolve to keep up, becoming ever more complex.

I recently wrote an article about how to prepare for a career in digital marketing, where I touched briefly on choosing a marketing specialism. Marketing is so vast that having a deep understanding of every niche would be near impossible for a single person to accomplish, which is why organizations often build teams made up of specialist marketers with expert knowledge in their niche.

If you’re looking to develop a skill set that will be sought after by employers, you could consider a career as a marketing specialist. Here are five marketing specialisms that are up-and-coming in 2021.

1. Social Media Manager

Social media managers spend their days managing the Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts of companies. They can work in-house for one company, work across multiple clients as part of an agency, or find their own clients as a freelancer.

More and more interactions between brands and customers now take place on social media, making this an in-demand career with a 9% increase in job growth over the last 10 years. Social media managers are expected to grow followings, engage with customers online, create strategies, and post regularly on company accounts.

The skills they use day-to-day include copywriting and basic graphic design to create posts, project management, strategy planning, and reporting on growth metrics.

As new social media platforms such as TikTok become popular, social media managers are expected to learn new skills quickly and adapt to the changing digital landscape.

2. Content Marketer

Content marketers are those who plan, strategize and create relevant content that will educate prospective customers about a brand, and make them more likely to convert.
